Lewis Smith & Co – Black Country Clients Upbeat

Clearly the recession is causing plenty of problems to the Black Country economy but Andrew Smith, who is a director at Lewis Smith & Co. the Dudley-based Black Country accountants, is keen to point out that there is good news to be had.

“Our clients are much more upbeat than 6 months ago and they are beginning to see a real increase in business activity. Fortunately this optimism is coming from all sectors from service to manufacturing: we have a steel stockholder client back in profit after 6 months, for instance.”

“We are also seeing a lot of new business start-ups, an area that we specialise in, as people take redundancy and invest their pay-outs. We are confident that most of these emerging entrepreneurs will be able to hold their own during the downturn and then take-off as the economy improves.”

Lewis Smith & Co. is living proof that companies can prosper in the midst of difficulties as it prepares to move to new, larger offices in Dudley. The new premises are part of its expansion plans and are need in order to house new staff and provide improved facilities for visiting clients.

Lewis Smith & Co. – Getting Ready for Our New Offices

At new officesLewis Smith & Co. are well established in Dudley, which is an ideal location because it allows the company to serve clients across the Black Country. The trouble is the existing offices are just not big enough to allow the firm to cope with the growth in its client base.

So Lewis Smith & Co. is on the move…just around the corner to Grange Road. The new building is being refurbished right now and directors Andrew Smith and Craig Beale are delighted that the many of the original features are being restored.

“We have found original coving and panelling as pieces of partition and false ceilings are removed. The building has been used as a Doctors’ surgery for some time and the need for waiting rooms and private examination areas led to a somewhat “antiseptic” interior decor.

Exam roomThe company is expected to move in mid-August and the new offices will provide Lewis Smith & Co. with better facilities for visiting clients as well as more space for the team.

We will keep you posted on progress and give you some views of how the work is going.

New Green Car Tax Regulations – Some You Win…

We all want to go green don’t we? And the Government is very keen to try and encourage us to switch to cars that have reduced CO2 emissions and use less fuel.

In case you didn’t notice, a number of changes to the way company cars can be offset against tax came into play in April this year. They might make you consider your options if you are thinking about making changes to your business vehicle or a fleet.

Broadly speaking allowances will be based on the level of CO2 emissions. If you are purchasing a vehicle then 110g/kg will be a figure at the top of your mind because you can get 100% tax allowance on the cost of a car with CO2 emissions at or below this level. For leased cars then 100% offset is available for vehicles with CO2 emissions of 160g/km

Then the rules start to get a bit more tricky. Craig Beale, a partner at Lewis Smith & Co., had this to say. “The new rules are relatively complicated, which makes deciding the best approach on company vehicles quite difficult. There may be implications for your overall tax position that need to be taken into account too. If you have any doubts then feel free to talk to us to establish the best course of action.”

Avoid the minimum wage penalties

Did you know that since 6th April 2009 employers will face a penalty if HMRC discovers that they haven’t paid the national minimum wage? At the same time workers who have’t received the proper amount are entitled to have arrears of wages repaid.

HMRC has given its officers new inspection powers and you may have read in previous Lewis Smith & Co. news items that the incidence of investigations has gone up dramatically in recent months.

Lewis Smith & Co. payroll clients can stay calm because we automatically notify them of any relevant changes to legislation and, depending on the level of service, we will update systems as necessary.

If you are finding payroll a burden or you have any concerns about the impact of financial legislation on your business then call 01384 235549 today to set up a free initial consultation.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

We are really pleased to have been able to support one of our clients, Alun Nicholas (a chartered architect) in an unusual charity escapade.

Alun has spent the last two and half years growing his hair to raise money for The Little Princess Trust and Acorns Children’s Hospice. The process has caused some grief: partly because that is three times longer than expected and also because he just prefers short hair.

The target length of 10 inches was important because the now chopped off hair is being donated for use in in wigs for children who have had illnesses.

You can see what Alun looked like before his locks were reclaimed at the Stourbridge News website.
